Crystal Gems Test: Supergirl

Welcome to the Crystal Gems Test, where we combine three media tests and see how the women in any given work are treated. Today we’ll take a look at the Supergirl Pilot and see how well it does.

In case you need a reminder, you can take a look at it HERE

In any case, let’s make a few things clear:

  • The Mako Mori Test refers to a character’s arc. while tv shows usually have seaosn-long arcs that need time to develop, characters can still have mini-arcs within individual episodes, and that is what i will count on here.
  • The Lamp Test was intended as a way of pointing out the objectification of women, however, i feel it can still be used for pointing out characters who add nothing of substance to the main plot.
  • The Bechdel-Wallace Test refers to two women talking to each other. Conversation, however, is not limited to an exchange of dialogue. It is far more complex than that. If a recorded message made by a female character is intended for a second female character and the message has an emotional impact on the latter even though there is no spoken dialogue, i am counting it.
  • I will choose four named female characters and put them to the test. to pass the omnibus test, each one must pass at least one individual test. In turn, i must be able to group the instances without repeating a character ( i cannot have Kara both passing the Bechdel-Wallace Test and the Lamp Test) i can, however, make multiple groupings (I can have a group with Kara passing the Bechdel-Wallace Test and a different group with her passing the Lamp Test)

Now let’s go right ahead!

Characters used on this test: Kara Danvers, Alex Danvers, Cat Grant and Alura Zor-el

Bechdel-Wallace Test:

Alex pep talk to Kara

Alex y Kara bechdel
When Kara believes she is not capable enough to be Supergirl, Alex goes tell her otherwise

Kara, Cat Grant and employees future

Kara and Cat Grant have a discussion about the latter's plan of firing a number of employees.

Alura’s message to Kara

Kara discovers a message from her mother that was in her ship back when she first arrived on earth telling Kara she can find her own path

Sadly, this all happen with Kara, but the four characters get to talk about something without including men. well done!

Lamp Test:

Kara stops a plane from crashing in the city

Kara first reveals herself by saving the people in a falling plane that, as we eventually find out, was hijacked by the episode's antagonist

Alex saves Kara from Vartox

When Vartox gets the upper-hand on his first fight with Supergirl, Alex comes to the rescue on a helicopter and he is forced to run away

Alura was the judge who originally put Vartox on Fort Rozz

Alura was the one who put Vartox and an unknown number of alien criminals on Fort Rozz

Cat Grant names The Mysterious Hero “Supergirl”

Cat Grant is the one to publicly name Kara
Cat Grant is the one to publicly name Kara “Supergirl” much to the other’s annoyance.

Admittely, the last one is kind of small, but hey! she did the title drop. that should count for something, right?

Mako Mori Test:

Alex eventual support of Kara as Supergirl

Alex starts off telling Kara to keep her powers a secret and trying to discourage her from being Supergirl, but eventually grows out of this view and start working together to stop Vartox

I am not counting Supergirl’s arc because, sadly, the subtext of Superman present is too much for me to say Kara’s Arc is passes the Mako Mori test.

Neither Alura nor Cat have any kind of arc in this episode. So sadly, they don’t count, either.

Test Result:
Characters who pass the Bechdel-Wallace Test: 4

Characters who pass the Lamp Test: 4

Characters who pass the Mako Mori Test: 1

Supergirl
9/12
