Halloween is coming up soon, and wether you are living in the United States or not (this being my case) that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate it by watching something with your friends! so here are 10 things you can watch in october 31!
1- The Book of Life (2014, Animated Movie, Directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez)
In short: As Manolo has to decide between following his heart and following the family tradition and living as a Toreador he is reunited with Maria, the love of his life, as well as his old friend-turned-rival-in-love Joaquin. But as a romantic attraction is growing between him and Maria, Manolo dies because of the machinaitons of the god Xibalba.
Why should you watch it: This is a movie rich in mexican culture with a message to not fear death, that love and friendship can conquer all and to always follow your heart. It is a movie starring a mexican character with an actual Mexican native doing the voice acting. Plus, it is a beautiful movie to watch, if you can get over the doll designs
2 – Underfist (2008, TV Special / Failed pilot, Created by Maxwell Atom)
In Short: Irving and a bunch of recurring character from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy must team-up together to stop an invasion from a candy army while Irving comes to terms with his monster heritage.
Why Should You Watch It: While the entirety of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy qualifies for this list, this halloween special has it’s own unique flavor as a bunch of characters you would not expect to see working together suddenly have to save the world. It has action, it has laughs, it even has some tender moments. It is only a shame the pilot wasn’t picked up by CN.
3 – Sleepy Hollow (1999, Live-Action Movie, Directed by Tim Burton)
In Short: Ichabod Crane, an unorthodox Police Constable and a man of Science is sent to the town of Sleepy Hollow to solve a number of mysteirous murders and prove hismethods are legit. There he will find the things he had chalked-off as mere superstitions are more real than he had originally thought.
Why should you watch it: It has a lot of athmosphere and dark humor all aorund and as a period piece works quite well. It’s a Tim Burton film in the best sense of the word and the mystery is a fun one.
4 – Ghostbusters (1984, Live-Aciton Movie, Directed by Ivan Reitman)In Short: Three unemployed parapsychology professors open a Ghost Busting agency in order to protect New York City from an increasing number of paranormal activity caused by the arrival of an Old God.
Why should you watch it: Because it’s ghostbusters. You probably saw it already, you are probably going to watch it again and in the unlikely case you haven’t watched it yet, next year’s upcoming reboot is the perfect excuse to finally do so with friends and get ready for the new one.
5 – Over the Garden Wall ( 2014, Animated Mini-Series, Created by Patrick McHale)
In Short: Two brothers find themselves in a mysteirous forest only known as The Unknown searching for a way home. In their travels they will find a number of colorful characters as well as being followed by the being only known as The Beast.
Why Should You Watch It: This ten-part mini-series uses North American folklore to create a great story about facing your fears, learn about your mistakes and growing up. There is also more than one surprise waiting for you in there.
6 – Hocus Pocus (1993, Live-Movie, Directed by Kenny Ortega)
In Short: A Virgin Teenage Boy accidentally brings back to life three evil witches who suck kids’ life force in order to keep on living. Now He, his sister, a girl he just met and an immortal talking cat have to evade them until the end of the night when the witches will die once again.
Why Should You Watch It: it’s campy as all hell and the three witches are a lot of fun to watch.
7 – A Nightmare Before Christmas (1993, Stop-Motion movie, Directed by Henry Selick)
In Short: In Halloween Town, ack Skellington has grown tired of Halloween and wants something new. When he discovers Christmas, he makes it his mission to bring the Christmas Spirit to Halloween Town, even though he doesn’t quite understand what that is.
Why Should You Watch It: Likable characters and spooky imagery. The Stop Motion is great. the songs are catchy. Plus this movie can be read as a criticism to cultural appropiation.
8 – Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1997, Animated Direct-to-video movie, Scooby-Doo created by Hannah Barbera)
In Short: Years after the Scooby-Gang went different ways in their lives, Fred brings everyone together for one last trip solving mysteries as a birthday gift to Daphne. In time they find themselves on a supposedly haunted island where, as they eventually learn, nothing is what it seems.
Why Should You Watch It: Considered by some as the best Scooby-Doo story ever made. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island makes a serious attempt to revitalize the franchise without losing it’s heart and does so magnificently. It’s fun, it’s scary, It’s Scooby-Doo.
9 – Danny Phantom: Reign Storm (2004, Made-for-TV Movie, Created by Butch Hartman)In Short: After Vlad frees The The king of the Ghosts Pariah Dark from his imprisonment, Danny and the rest of Amity Park face an invasion from an enemy that even the rest of the Phantom Zone is scared of.
Why Should You Watch It: Even if you never saw Danny Phantom, this is a great special full of excitment as the characters try to find a way of stopping a seemingly invencible enemy.
10 – The Simpson’s Treehouse of Horror Specials ( Halloween Specials, Created by Matt Groening)
In Short: Multiple Episodes with three horror-comedy themed short stories.
Why Should You Watch It: Because they are some of the best episodes of the entire show and there are enough of them to watch all day. Pick two at random and enjoy with your friends.
